The third act of a remarkable trilogy, 2020 brought Bordeaux a damp spring and a summer of severe drought that shrank berry size and concentrated aromas and tannins, while retaining remarkable freshness. Mouton Rothschild 2020, with its label by painter Peter Doig, is a wine of great intensity and purity: cassis, blackberry, black cherry, graphite, cedar, tobacco and floral notes on a dense, silky palate of impressive length. James Suckling awarded it 99 points. Still very young yet already spellbinding in its balance, it is a Mouton destined for very long evolution in the cellar.
The producer · Château Mouton Rothschild
Acquired in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, Château Mouton Rothschild stands in Pauillac, at the heart of the Médoc, on a rise of deep gravel overlooking the Gironde estuary. Its modern history belongs to Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who transformed the estate from 1922: he was among the first to bottle the entire crop at the château and, from 1945, launched the tradition of labels designed each year by a great artist, from Chagall and Picasso to Warhol and Bacon. His half-century campaign ended in 1973 with promotion to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the only revision ever made to the 1855 classification. Today the estate is run by the children of Baroness Philippine. The vineyard is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and yields wines of great opulence and depth, famed for their cassis, cedar and tobacco notes and for longevity measured in decades.
