After an exceptionally warm, dry spring and a cool, irregular summer, 2011 gave Bordeaux an uneven vintage with a classic, less opulent profile, in which the best Left Bank Cabernet terroirs made the difference. Mouton Rothschild 2011, illustrated by artist Guy de Rougemont, shows a drier, more vertical character: blackcurrant, cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf and aromatic herbs, on still-firm tannins with good freshness. Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast rated it 95 points. It is still developing and asks for patience; with time in the cellar it will soften, broaden and gain the complexity typical of mature Pauillac.
The producer · Château Mouton Rothschild
Acquired in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, Château Mouton Rothschild stands in Pauillac, at the heart of the Médoc, on a rise of deep gravel overlooking the Gironde estuary. Its modern history belongs to Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who transformed the estate from 1922: he was among the first to bottle the entire crop at the château and, from 1945, launched the tradition of labels designed each year by a great artist, from Chagall and Picasso to Warhol and Bacon. His half-century campaign ended in 1973 with promotion to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the only revision ever made to the 1855 classification. Today the estate is run by the children of Baroness Philippine. The vineyard is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and yields wines of great opulence and depth, famed for their cassis, cedar and tobacco notes and for longevity measured in decades.
