2000 is one of Bordeaux's great vintages: after a damp spring, a warm summer and a dry, bright September ripened healthy, concentrated grapes, especially on the Left Bank. Mouton Rothschild 2000 is also a collector's bottle for its dress: instead of the usual label, the golden Augsburg Ram from the château's collection is applied to the glass to celebrate the new millennium. In the glass it shows cassis, blackberry, cedar, cigar box, graphite and forest floor, with tannins now polished and a still-firm structure. Robert Parker rated it 97 points. The wine is at its peak today, the ideal moment to enjoy its full complexity.
The producer · Château Mouton Rothschild
Acquired in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, Château Mouton Rothschild stands in Pauillac, at the heart of the Médoc, on a rise of deep gravel overlooking the Gironde estuary. Its modern history belongs to Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who transformed the estate from 1922: he was among the first to bottle the entire crop at the château and, from 1945, launched the tradition of labels designed each year by a great artist, from Chagall and Picasso to Warhol and Bacon. His half-century campaign ended in 1973 with promotion to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the only revision ever made to the 1855 classification. Today the estate is run by the children of Baroness Philippine. The vineyard is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and yields wines of great opulence and depth, famed for their cassis, cedar and tobacco notes and for longevity measured in decades.
