The wine in this vintage

2012 was a complex year in Bordeaux: a cold, wet spring, a hot, dry summer and a rainy October demanded strict selection, rewarding the great terroirs capable of ripening Cabernet. Mouton Rothschild 2012, with a label by the artistic duo Tursic & Mille, shows a harmonious, approachable profile: currant, blackberry, cedar, cigar and spice on a medium-weight palate with soft tannins and an elegant finish. Robert Parker gave it 96 points. It relies on finesse and balance rather than power: it is at its peak today and shows its best right now.

The producer · Château Mouton Rothschild

Acquired in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, Château Mouton Rothschild stands in Pauillac, at the heart of the Médoc, on a rise of deep gravel overlooking the Gironde estuary. Its modern history belongs to Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who transformed the estate from 1922: he was among the first to bottle the entire crop at the château and, from 1945, launched the tradition of labels designed each year by a great artist, from Chagall and Picasso to Warhol and Bacon. His half-century campaign ended in 1973 with promotion to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the only revision ever made to the 1855 classification. Today the estate is run by the children of Baroness Philippine. The vineyard is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and yields wines of great opulence and depth, famed for their cassis, cedar and tobacco notes and for longevity measured in decades.
