2015 was a warm, sunny vintage in Bordeaux, with a dry summer and some late-August rain that encouraged complete ripening: rich, harmonious wines, especially brilliant in Margaux and on the Right Bank, but excellent in Pauillac too. Mouton Rothschild 2015, with its Gerhard Richter label, combines opulence and finesse: blackcurrant, blackberry, cherry, cocoa, sweet spice, cedar and graphite on a full, velvety palate. Robert Parker and Wine Enthusiast both rated it 98 points. The wine is beginning to show its generosity but still has ample room to grow and can be cellared comfortably for many years.
The producer · Château Mouton Rothschild
Acquired in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, Château Mouton Rothschild stands in Pauillac, at the heart of the Médoc, on a rise of deep gravel overlooking the Gironde estuary. Its modern history belongs to Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who transformed the estate from 1922: he was among the first to bottle the entire crop at the château and, from 1945, launched the tradition of labels designed each year by a great artist, from Chagall and Picasso to Warhol and Bacon. His half-century campaign ended in 1973 with promotion to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the only revision ever made to the 1855 classification. Today the estate is run by the children of Baroness Philippine. The vineyard is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and yields wines of great opulence and depth, famed for their cassis, cedar and tobacco notes and for longevity measured in decades.
