A dry, warm but not scorching year, 2005 gave Bordeaux wines of extraordinary concentration, with imposing tannins and well-preserved acidity: a vintage celebrated for its ageing potential. Mouton Rothschild 2005, with a label by Italian artist Giuseppe Penone, fully reflects that structure: blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, graphite, tobacco and spice on a dense, deep palate whose tannic weave is still tight. Robert Parker gave it 98 points. Despite the years that have passed, this wine has not yet reached full maturity: it should rest in the cellar, where it will evolve slowly and harmoniously.
The producer · Château Mouton Rothschild
Acquired in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, Château Mouton Rothschild stands in Pauillac, at the heart of the Médoc, on a rise of deep gravel overlooking the Gironde estuary. Its modern history belongs to Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who transformed the estate from 1922: he was among the first to bottle the entire crop at the château and, from 1945, launched the tradition of labels designed each year by a great artist, from Chagall and Picasso to Warhol and Bacon. His half-century campaign ended in 1973 with promotion to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the only revision ever made to the 1855 classification. Today the estate is run by the children of Baroness Philippine. The vineyard is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and yields wines of great opulence and depth, famed for their cassis, cedar and tobacco notes and for longevity measured in decades.
