After a cool, irregular summer, 2014 in Bordeaux was rescued by an exceptionally warm, dry September and October that allowed Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen calmly: a classic vintage, particularly successful on the Left Bank. Mouton Rothschild 2014, also famous for its David Hockney label, is a clear expression of it: cassis, blackberry, cedar, graphite, violet and tobacco on a fine yet present tannic frame with lively freshness. Jancis Robinson rated it 18.5/20. The wine is still young and tight, far from its peak: it deserves to be waited for, and will reward patience with elegance and depth.
The producer · Château Mouton Rothschild
Acquired in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, Château Mouton Rothschild stands in Pauillac, at the heart of the Médoc, on a rise of deep gravel overlooking the Gironde estuary. Its modern history belongs to Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who transformed the estate from 1922: he was among the first to bottle the entire crop at the château and, from 1945, launched the tradition of labels designed each year by a great artist, from Chagall and Picasso to Warhol and Bacon. His half-century campaign ended in 1973 with promotion to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the only revision ever made to the 1855 classification. Today the estate is run by the children of Baroness Philippine. The vineyard is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and yields wines of great opulence and depth, famed for their cassis, cedar and tobacco notes and for longevity measured in decades.
