2019 was a warm, dry vintage in Bordeaux, but with cool nights and well-timed rain, producing wines with fine concentration, silky tannins and surprisingly lively acidity: a year of great balance. Mouton Rothschild 2019, illustrated by Olafur Eliasson, offers a refined, deep reading of it: blackcurrant, blueberry, violet, graphite, cedar and sweet spice, with a full yet streamlined palate and a very long finish. Robert Parker gave it 99 points and Jancis Robinson 18.5/20. Already harmonious for such a young wine, it has decades of evolution ahead and deserves patient cellaring.
The producer · Château Mouton Rothschild
Acquired in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, Château Mouton Rothschild stands in Pauillac, at the heart of the Médoc, on a rise of deep gravel overlooking the Gironde estuary. Its modern history belongs to Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who transformed the estate from 1922: he was among the first to bottle the entire crop at the château and, from 1945, launched the tradition of labels designed each year by a great artist, from Chagall and Picasso to Warhol and Bacon. His half-century campaign ended in 1973 with promotion to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the only revision ever made to the 1855 classification. Today the estate is run by the children of Baroness Philippine. The vineyard is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and yields wines of great opulence and depth, famed for their cassis, cedar and tobacco notes and for longevity measured in decades.
