2006 is a classic Left Bank vintage: a very hot July, a cool August and a variable September produced wines with firm tannic structure and a more austere profile than the great sunny years, with Cabernet Sauvignon in the lead. Mouton Rothschild 2006, whose label bears the signature of Lucian Freud, offers cassis, blackberry, tobacco leaf, cedar and graphite, with well-defined tertiary hints of leather and forest floor. The palate is compact and long, with tannins that have softened over time. Wine Enthusiast awarded it 97 points. It is at its peak today: a fine moment to open it and enjoy its typically Pauillac character.
The producer · Château Mouton Rothschild
Acquired in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, Château Mouton Rothschild stands in Pauillac, at the heart of the Médoc, on a rise of deep gravel overlooking the Gironde estuary. Its modern history belongs to Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who transformed the estate from 1922: he was among the first to bottle the entire crop at the château and, from 1945, launched the tradition of labels designed each year by a great artist, from Chagall and Picasso to Warhol and Bacon. His half-century campaign ended in 1973 with promotion to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the only revision ever made to the 1855 classification. Today the estate is run by the children of Baroness Philippine. The vineyard is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and yields wines of great opulence and depth, famed for their cassis, cedar and tobacco notes and for longevity measured in decades.
