A spring frost followed by a dry, sunny summer shaped 2021 in Tuscany: yields were reduced but grape quality was excellent, with great concentration and freshness. The 2021 Tenuta di Trinoro is an intense, precise expression: black fruit, blackcurrant, violet, graphite, herbs and spice, with a deep palate, dense, ripe tannins and an acid thread lending lift and length. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate rated it 96 points and Decanter 95. It is still in its early youth: already pleasurable for the vitality of its fruit, it will improve with a few years in bottle.
The producer · Tenuta di Trinoro
Tenuta di Trinoro is the visionary creation of Andrea Franchetti, who in the early 1980s chose a remote corner of the Val d'Orcia near Sarteano, on Tuscany's southern edge, far from any famous wine district. On clay and stony soils, amid woods and eroded hillsides, he planted Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux's Right Bank yet determined to express an entirely new place. The dense, low-yielding vineyards are picked plot by plot, often very late, to obtain fully ripe fruit. The flagship, Tenuta di Trinoro, is a powerful, multifaceted red in which Cabernet Franc has long played a central role. Franchetti, who died in 2021, was also the modern pioneer of Etna with Passopisciaro. Today his family carries the work forward, keeping Trinoro among the most original Tuscan reds and a favourite of collectors.
