The wine in this vintage

Cool and late, 2013 produced Tuscan wines of great elegance and aromatic finesse, more lifted than powerful. At Trinoro, where picking often extends into November, the long autumn allowed the grapes to reach complete ripeness. The 2013 Tenuta di Trinoro offers scents of blackcurrant, raspberry, violet, tobacco and graphite, with herbal and spicy notes; the palate is relaxed and precise, with fine tannins and lively freshness. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded it 95 points. A wine of great balance, it is already enjoyable and capable of evolving gracefully for several more years.

The producer · Tenuta di Trinoro

Tenuta di Trinoro is the visionary creation of Andrea Franchetti, who in the early 1980s chose a remote corner of the Val d'Orcia near Sarteano, on Tuscany's southern edge, far from any famous wine district. On clay and stony soils, amid woods and eroded hillsides, he planted Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux's Right Bank yet determined to express an entirely new place. The dense, low-yielding vineyards are picked plot by plot, often very late, to obtain fully ripe fruit. The flagship, Tenuta di Trinoro, is a powerful, multifaceted red in which Cabernet Franc has long played a central role. Franchetti, who died in 2021, was also the modern pioneer of Etna with Passopisciaro. Today his family carries the work forward, keeping Trinoro among the most original Tuscan reds and a favourite of collectors.
