The wine in this vintage

2020 in Tuscany was a warm, dry yet balanced vintage that gave ripe, harmonious wines with juicy fruit and soft tannins. The 2020 Tenuta di Trinoro was received with enthusiasm: Jancis Robinson gave it 18/20 and Wine Advocate 97 points. In the glass it offers a rich nose of blackcurrant, blackberry, cherry, herbs, spice and graphite, with a dense, velvety palate, a tight yet silky tannic weave and a long, fresh finish. A red of great completeness, it is seductive already, but has the structure to evolve in the cellar for a long time.

The producer · Tenuta di Trinoro

Tenuta di Trinoro is the visionary creation of Andrea Franchetti, who in the early 1980s chose a remote corner of the Val d'Orcia near Sarteano, on Tuscany's southern edge, far from any famous wine district. On clay and stony soils, amid woods and eroded hillsides, he planted Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux's Right Bank yet determined to express an entirely new place. The dense, low-yielding vineyards are picked plot by plot, often very late, to obtain fully ripe fruit. The flagship, Tenuta di Trinoro, is a powerful, multifaceted red in which Cabernet Franc has long played a central role. Franchetti, who died in 2021, was also the modern pioneer of Etna with Passopisciaro. Today his family carries the work forward, keeping Trinoro among the most original Tuscan reds and a favourite of collectors.
