The wine in this vintage

2014 was a difficult vintage in Tuscany, with a cool, rainy summer that demanded intensive vineyard work and strict selection; the best results came from those who could afford to wait. The 2014 Tenuta di Trinoro offers a lighter, more fragrant version than the warm years: cherry, redcurrant, herbs, tobacco leaf and fine spice, with a nimble palate, delicate tannins and pronounced freshness. Wine Spectator rated it 94 points, a notable result for the vintage. A wine to enjoy for its elegance and drinkability, it is ready now yet still able to hold for a few years in the cellar.

The producer · Tenuta di Trinoro

Tenuta di Trinoro is the visionary creation of Andrea Franchetti, who in the early 1980s chose a remote corner of the Val d'Orcia near Sarteano, on Tuscany's southern edge, far from any famous wine district. On clay and stony soils, amid woods and eroded hillsides, he planted Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux's Right Bank yet determined to express an entirely new place. The dense, low-yielding vineyards are picked plot by plot, often very late, to obtain fully ripe fruit. The flagship, Tenuta di Trinoro, is a powerful, multifaceted red in which Cabernet Franc has long played a central role. Franchetti, who died in 2021, was also the modern pioneer of Etna with Passopisciaro. Today his family carries the work forward, keeping Trinoro among the most original Tuscan reds and a favourite of collectors.
