A hot summer, culminating in an intense late-August heatwave, defined 2011 in Tuscany, producing ripe, rich wines with generous fruit. The 2011 Tenuta di Trinoro harnesses this richness in an opulent profile: ripe black fruit, plum, cassis, chocolate, sweet spice and scrubland notes, with a broad palate, soft tannins and remarkable length. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded it 96 points, among the estate's highest scores of that period. Generous and enveloping, it is now in full expression and can be enjoyed with satisfaction or kept for a few more years without concern.
The producer · Tenuta di Trinoro
Tenuta di Trinoro is the visionary creation of Andrea Franchetti, who in the early 1980s chose a remote corner of the Val d'Orcia near Sarteano, on Tuscany's southern edge, far from any famous wine district. On clay and stony soils, amid woods and eroded hillsides, he planted Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux's Right Bank yet determined to express an entirely new place. The dense, low-yielding vineyards are picked plot by plot, often very late, to obtain fully ripe fruit. The flagship, Tenuta di Trinoro, is a powerful, multifaceted red in which Cabernet Franc has long played a central role. Franchetti, who died in 2021, was also the modern pioneer of Etna with Passopisciaro. Today his family carries the work forward, keeping Trinoro among the most original Tuscan reds and a favourite of collectors.
