After a rainy spring, 2018 in Tuscany brought an even summer and a long, favourable autumn, ideal conditions for an estate like Trinoro that picks late and plot by plot. The 2018 Tenuta di Trinoro is indeed one of the estate's finest vintages, with 98 points from Wine Advocate and 96 from Wine Enthusiast. The nose shows blackcurrant, blackberry, violet, herbs, graphite and fine spice; the palate is deep and harmonious, with polished tannins and a freshness that heightens its length. Already surprisingly expressive, it will continue to grow in bottle for many years.
The producer · Tenuta di Trinoro
Tenuta di Trinoro is the visionary creation of Andrea Franchetti, who in the early 1980s chose a remote corner of the Val d'Orcia near Sarteano, on Tuscany's southern edge, far from any famous wine district. On clay and stony soils, amid woods and eroded hillsides, he planted Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux's Right Bank yet determined to express an entirely new place. The dense, low-yielding vineyards are picked plot by plot, often very late, to obtain fully ripe fruit. The flagship, Tenuta di Trinoro, is a powerful, multifaceted red in which Cabernet Franc has long played a central role. Franchetti, who died in 2021, was also the modern pioneer of Etna with Passopisciaro. Today his family carries the work forward, keeping Trinoro among the most original Tuscan reds and a favourite of collectors.
