2017 in Tuscany was marked by spring frosts, a scorching summer and prolonged drought, with very low yields and concentrated grapes. At Trinoro, old vines and plot-by-plot harvesting helped temper the extremes. The 2017 Tenuta di Trinoro shows ripe black fruit, plum, spice, cocoa and a note of dried herbs, with a rich, warm palate, ripe tannins and a still fresh finish. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate rated it 95 points. A generous, sunny red, already enjoyable today, it has the structure to be cellared comfortably for a few more years.
The producer · Tenuta di Trinoro
Tenuta di Trinoro is the visionary creation of Andrea Franchetti, who in the early 1980s chose a remote corner of the Val d'Orcia near Sarteano, on Tuscany's southern edge, far from any famous wine district. On clay and stony soils, amid woods and eroded hillsides, he planted Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux's Right Bank yet determined to express an entirely new place. The dense, low-yielding vineyards are picked plot by plot, often very late, to obtain fully ripe fruit. The flagship, Tenuta di Trinoro, is a powerful, multifaceted red in which Cabernet Franc has long played a central role. Franchetti, who died in 2021, was also the modern pioneer of Etna with Passopisciaro. Today his family carries the work forward, keeping Trinoro among the most original Tuscan reds and a favourite of collectors.
