Remembered for the late-April frost that hit parts of Bordeaux hard, 2017 largely spared the best-sited vineyards near the Gironde, where the season continued favourably with a warm summer and a calm harvest. The best wines are classic, fragrant and balanced. Château Margaux 2017 is a luminous example: violet, blackcurrant, cherry, cedar, graphite and fine spice, with an elegant, fresh palate, silky tannins and a long, precise finish. Robert Parker rated it 98 points. More lifted than powerful, Margaux 2017 is already enjoyable thanks to its harmony, yet it has the structure to keep improving for several years.
The producer · Château Margaux
One of the four Premiers Grands Crus Classés of the famous 1855 Classification, Château Margaux is perhaps the most emblematic estate in Bordeaux, the ultimate symbol of Médoc elegance. The property, with its majestic neo-Palladian château from the early nineteenth century, lies in the commune of the same name on the left bank of the Gironde, on deep gravel soils particularly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, the grape that dominates the Grand Vin alongside small proportions of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Since 1977 the estate has belonged to the Mentzelopoulos family: André launched a sweeping renovation, continued by his daughter Corinne with the legendary director Paul Pontallier and, after his passing, with Philippe Bascaules. The estate also makes Pavillon Rouge and Pavillon Blanc, a white from Sauvignon Blanc. Château Margaux's style combines floral aromas of extraordinary finesse, silky tannins and a structure built to defy the decades: a wine that embodies the very idea of great Bordeaux.
