2016 is regarded as one of the most complete Bordeaux vintages: after a rainy spring, a very dry summer and a balanced September produced Cabernet Sauvignon of extraordinary quality, with fine tannins, freshness and depth. The first vintage entirely under Philippe Bascaules, Château Margaux 2016 is a wine of great classicism: cassis, blueberry, violet, graphite, cedar, orange peel and spice, with a palate that is both powerful and chiselled, silky tannins and very long persistence. Robert Parker gave it 99 points, Jancis Robinson 18.5/20. The 2016 is already captivating but only at the start of its life: its energy and structure guarantee decades of evolution in the cellar.
The producer · Château Margaux
One of the four Premiers Grands Crus Classés of the famous 1855 Classification, Château Margaux is perhaps the most emblematic estate in Bordeaux, the ultimate symbol of Médoc elegance. The property, with its majestic neo-Palladian château from the early nineteenth century, lies in the commune of the same name on the left bank of the Gironde, on deep gravel soils particularly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, the grape that dominates the Grand Vin alongside small proportions of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Since 1977 the estate has belonged to the Mentzelopoulos family: André launched a sweeping renovation, continued by his daughter Corinne with the legendary director Paul Pontallier and, after his passing, with Philippe Bascaules. The estate also makes Pavillon Rouge and Pavillon Blanc, a white from Sauvignon Blanc. Château Margaux's style combines floral aromas of extraordinary finesse, silky tannins and a structure built to defy the decades: a wine that embodies the very idea of great Bordeaux.
