2011 in Bordeaux was an uneven vintage: a hot, dry spring, a cool summer and a harvest punctuated by some rain called for rigorous selection. At the top estates, and especially in Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines, the results were more than convincing. Château Margaux 2011 is a good example: a classically styled wine, more lifted than opulent, with blackcurrant, blueberry, violet, tobacco, cedar and a mineral note, and a taut palate with fine tannins and a persistent finish. Wine Enthusiast rated it 95 points. The 2011 is still fairly compact and reserved; a few more years in bottle will allow it to develop its complexity and soften its tannic frame.
The producer · Château Margaux
One of the four Premiers Grands Crus Classés of the famous 1855 Classification, Château Margaux is perhaps the most emblematic estate in Bordeaux, the ultimate symbol of Médoc elegance. The property, with its majestic neo-Palladian château from the early nineteenth century, lies in the commune of the same name on the left bank of the Gironde, on deep gravel soils particularly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, the grape that dominates the Grand Vin alongside small proportions of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Since 1977 the estate has belonged to the Mentzelopoulos family: André launched a sweeping renovation, continued by his daughter Corinne with the legendary director Paul Pontallier and, after his passing, with Philippe Bascaules. The estate also makes Pavillon Rouge and Pavillon Blanc, a white from Sauvignon Blanc. Château Margaux's style combines floral aromas of extraordinary finesse, silky tannins and a structure built to defy the decades: a wine that embodies the very idea of great Bordeaux.
