Warm, sunny and generous, 2009 in Bordeaux produced opulent wines with ripe fruit and enveloping tannins, celebrated by critics as one of the most seductive vintages ever. Château Margaux 2009 interprets that richness with restraint and elegance: cassis, blackberry, black cherry, violet, sweet spice, cedar and a touch of cocoa form an intense bouquet, while the palate is broad and velvety, supported by substantial structure and a freshness that ensures balance. Robert Parker rated it 98 points, as did Wine Enthusiast. Although its generous fruit already makes it captivating, the 2009 is still young and has many years of evolution ahead; to fully appreciate its complexity, wait a while longer or decant it for a long time.
The producer · Château Margaux
One of the four Premiers Grands Crus Classés of the famous 1855 Classification, Château Margaux is perhaps the most emblematic estate in Bordeaux, the ultimate symbol of Médoc elegance. The property, with its majestic neo-Palladian château from the early nineteenth century, lies in the commune of the same name on the left bank of the Gironde, on deep gravel soils particularly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, the grape that dominates the Grand Vin alongside small proportions of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Since 1977 the estate has belonged to the Mentzelopoulos family: André launched a sweeping renovation, continued by his daughter Corinne with the legendary director Paul Pontallier and, after his passing, with Philippe Bascaules. The estate also makes Pavillon Rouge and Pavillon Blanc, a white from Sauvignon Blanc. Château Margaux's style combines floral aromas of extraordinary finesse, silky tannins and a structure built to defy the decades: a wine that embodies the very idea of great Bordeaux.
