Hailed as a great Bordeaux vintage from the outset, 2000 enjoyed a warm, dry summer after a difficult spring, with a harvest in ideal conditions and perfectly ripe grapes. Château Margaux 2000 is regarded as one of the estate's legendary wines: a Cabernet Sauvignon of extraordinary concentration and great finesse. The bouquet brings together cassis, blackberry, violet, cedar, graphite, tobacco and forest floor; the palate is deep and silky, with tannins now perfectly integrated and a very long finish. Robert Parker gave it 99 points. More than two decades on, this Margaux has reached its peak: tertiary complexity is fully developed while the structure remains firm. A wine to open now, with due respect.
The producer · Château Margaux
One of the four Premiers Grands Crus Classés of the famous 1855 Classification, Château Margaux is perhaps the most emblematic estate in Bordeaux, the ultimate symbol of Médoc elegance. The property, with its majestic neo-Palladian château from the early nineteenth century, lies in the commune of the same name on the left bank of the Gironde, on deep gravel soils particularly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, the grape that dominates the Grand Vin alongside small proportions of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Since 1977 the estate has belonged to the Mentzelopoulos family: André launched a sweeping renovation, continued by his daughter Corinne with the legendary director Paul Pontallier and, after his passing, with Philippe Bascaules. The estate also makes Pavillon Rouge and Pavillon Blanc, a white from Sauvignon Blanc. Château Margaux's style combines floral aromas of extraordinary finesse, silky tannins and a structure built to defy the decades: a wine that embodies the very idea of great Bordeaux.
