The wine in this vintage

With its scorching summer and spring frost, 2017 produced concentrated and at times severe Barolos, but the deepest, coolest sites kept their balance. Brunate is one of them: Giuseppe Rinaldi's Barolo Brunate 2017 combines ripe fruit with surprising finesse. Dark cherry, blackberry, dried rose, spice and leather lead into a full palate with firm, well-integrated tannins and a savoury, persistent finish. Wine Enthusiast awarded it 98 points and Decanter 95. The wine is already expressive and enjoyable, yet it has the structure to continue evolving in the cellar for a long time.

The producer · Giuseppe Rinaldi

In the heart of the village of Barolo, the Giuseppe Rinaldi cellar is one of the sanctuaries of traditional Barolo. The family has made wine for generations, and it was Giuseppe Rinaldi, nicknamed "Citrico" for his sharp wit, who turned the estate into an international reference, stubbornly defending a classic style while many others chased barriques. Today his daughters Marta and Carlotta run the winery, following in the footsteps of their father, who passed away in 2018. The vineyards lie in some of the appellation's most celebrated crus: Brunate, Cannubi San Lorenzo, Ravera and Le Coste, joined more recently by Bussia in Monforte d'Alba. Brunate yields the flagship wine, while Tre Tine is a blend of several plots in the old Langhe tradition. In the cellar, spontaneous fermentations, long macerations and ageing in large oak casks are the rule. The result is transparent, perfumed, remarkably long-lived Barolo, among the most coveted by collectors worldwide.
