The wine in this vintage

Frost, hail, mildew and difficult flowering drastically cut Champagne yields in 2012; a hot, sunny August then concentrated the remaining grapes, giving wines of great richness and intensity with well-preserved acidity. Pinot Noir in particular delivered outstanding results. Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2012 is powerful and elegant at once, with red fruit, candied citrus, pastry, toasted almond, chalk and floral notes on a deep, vibrant palate. James Suckling gave it 98 points and Wine Enthusiast 99. Still young, it will gain complexity with time. Serve it at 9-11°C in a white-wine glass rather than a flute, to let its complexity emerge.

Founded in 1849 by Pol Roger, the house is based in Épernay on the famous Avenue de Champagne and is one of the few great houses still wholly owned by the founding family. Its cellars, among the deepest and coolest in the town, allow long ageing on the lees at a constant temperature, one of the secrets of the house style: very fine bubbles, elegance, precision and remarkable ageing capacity. Pol Roger owns vineyards in the Montagne de Reims, the Côte des Blancs and the Vallée de la Marne, complemented by grapes from trusted growers. Its bond with Winston Churchill, a devoted admirer of the house and friend of Odette Pol-Roger, is legendary: in his honour the house created the Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill, made only in the finest years, Pinot Noir-led from grand cru vineyards and designed to embody the structure, depth and longevity the statesman loved in his Champagne. Today it is one of the most admired prestige cuvées in Champagne.
