The wine in this vintage

2006 was a warm vintage in Champagne, with a scorching July, a cool, rainy August and a sunny September: ripe, round, generous wines, more immediate than the tauter years. Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2006 translates this richness into a broad, enveloping profile of yellow peach, apricot, brioche, butter, hazelnut and sweet spice, supported by Pinot Noir's structure and well-judged freshness. Wine Enthusiast rated it 98 points. It offers great pleasure and complexity today, yet can still be kept with confidence for several years. Serve it at 9-11°C in a white-wine glass rather than a flute, to let its complexity emerge.

The producer · Pol Roger

Founded in 1849 by Pol Roger, the house is based in Épernay on the famous Avenue de Champagne and is one of the few great houses still wholly owned by the founding family. Its cellars, among the deepest and coolest in the town, allow long ageing on the lees at a constant temperature, one of the secrets of the house style: very fine bubbles, elegance, precision and remarkable ageing capacity. Pol Roger owns vineyards in the Montagne de Reims, the Côte des Blancs and the Vallée de la Marne, complemented by grapes from trusted growers. Its bond with Winston Churchill, a devoted admirer of the house and friend of Odette Pol-Roger, is legendary: in his honour the house created the Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill, made only in the finest years, Pinot Noir-led from grand cru vineyards and designed to embody the structure, depth and longevity the statesman loved in his Champagne. Today it is one of the most admired prestige cuvées in Champagne.
