For many, 2008 is Champagne's great vintage of the new century: a grey, cool summer rescued by a bright, breezy September gave healthy grapes with exceptional acidity, producing taut, deep wines built to last. Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2008 is a masterly portrait of the year: lemon, grapefruit, green apple, white flowers, chalk and still discreet brioche notes on a vertical, crystalline palate with a very fine mousse and an extremely long finish. Wine Enthusiast awarded it 100 points. Already thrilling, this Champagne has many years of evolution ahead. It pairs superbly with shellfish, turbot or poultry in cream sauces.
The producer · Pol Roger
Founded in 1849 by Pol Roger, the house is based in Épernay on the famous Avenue de Champagne and is one of the few great houses still wholly owned by the founding family. Its cellars, among the deepest and coolest in the town, allow long ageing on the lees at a constant temperature, one of the secrets of the house style: very fine bubbles, elegance, precision and remarkable ageing capacity. Pol Roger owns vineyards in the Montagne de Reims, the Côte des Blancs and the Vallée de la Marne, complemented by grapes from trusted growers. Its bond with Winston Churchill, a devoted admirer of the house and friend of Odette Pol-Roger, is legendary: in his honour the house created the Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill, made only in the finest years, Pinot Noir-led from grand cru vineyards and designed to embody the structure, depth and longevity the statesman loved in his Champagne. Today it is one of the most admired prestige cuvées in Champagne.
