Sunny and regular, 2009 brought ripe, healthy grapes to Champagne and generous, supple wines of immediate appeal, though without the tension of 2008. Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2009 uses Pinot Noir's structure to give depth to the richness of the year: yellow apple, white peach, dried fruit, toast, acacia honey and spice, on a full, creamy palate with attractive freshness on the finish. Wine Spectator rated it 95 points. It is drinking with great satisfaction now and can be kept for a few more years, gaining further complexity. Serve it slightly cool in a wide glass, with seafood, white meats or aged Comté.
The producer · Pol Roger
Founded in 1849 by Pol Roger, the house is based in Épernay on the famous Avenue de Champagne and is one of the few great houses still wholly owned by the founding family. Its cellars, among the deepest and coolest in the town, allow long ageing on the lees at a constant temperature, one of the secrets of the house style: very fine bubbles, elegance, precision and remarkable ageing capacity. Pol Roger owns vineyards in the Montagne de Reims, the Côte des Blancs and the Vallée de la Marne, complemented by grapes from trusted growers. Its bond with Winston Churchill, a devoted admirer of the house and friend of Odette Pol-Roger, is legendary: in his honour the house created the Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill, made only in the finest years, Pinot Noir-led from grand cru vineyards and designed to embody the structure, depth and longevity the statesman loved in his Champagne. Today it is one of the most admired prestige cuvées in Champagne.
