Sunshine, warmth and an even season made 2015 one of the most celebrated recent Valpolicella vintages, with healthy, ripe grapes perfect for long drying. Quintarelli's Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2015 conveys that generosity with the house's customary composure: morello cherry, blackberry, dried figs, chocolate, exotic spice, liquorice and a balsamic note, on a full, velvety and deep palate, supported by an acidity that keeps it fresh. Robert Parker awarded it 96 points. Already captivating, it is an Amarone that will keep and evolve for a long time.
The producer · Giuseppe Quintarelli
Giuseppe Quintarelli, known to all as Bepi, was the master of Valpolicella and one of the great artisans of Italian wine. The winery stands at Cerè di Negrar, in the hills of Valpolicella Classica north of Verona, where the family has tended vines since the early twentieth century. Bepi took over after the war and, with almost monastic rigour, turned it into a legend: obsessive grape selection, long drying in the fruttai, slow fermentations and many years of ageing in large Slavonian oak casks, with wines released only when ready. The terraced vineyards, partly trained on pergola, grow Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella alongside varieties such as Cabernet, Nebbiolo and Croatina. Amarone is made only in years judged worthy. Since Bepi's death in 2012, his daughter Fiorenza and grandsons Francesco and Lorenzo Grassi have faithfully preserved his style: deep, complex wines of legendary longevity.
