The wine in this vintage

2011 in Valpolicella was shaped by an early spring and a very hot August that accelerated ripening, giving rich grapes perfect for drying. Quintarelli's Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2011 is a wine of great fullness, earning 96 points from Antonio Galloni. The bouquet opens with black cherry, dried berries, cocoa, spice, candied orange peel and medicinal herbs; the palate is warm, dense and enveloping, with an acid thread that keeps it balanced and a long, spicy finish. Already enjoyable, it can be kept for a long time, improving with age.

The producer · Giuseppe Quintarelli

Giuseppe Quintarelli, known to all as Bepi, was the master of Valpolicella and one of the great artisans of Italian wine. The winery stands at Cerè di Negrar, in the hills of Valpolicella Classica north of Verona, where the family has tended vines since the early twentieth century. Bepi took over after the war and, with almost monastic rigour, turned it into a legend: obsessive grape selection, long drying in the fruttai, slow fermentations and many years of ageing in large Slavonian oak casks, with wines released only when ready. The terraced vineyards, partly trained on pergola, grow Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella alongside varieties such as Cabernet, Nebbiolo and Croatina. Amarone is made only in years judged worthy. Since Bepi's death in 2012, his daughter Fiorenza and grandsons Francesco and Lorenzo Grassi have faithfully preserved his style: deep, complex wines of legendary longevity.
