The wine in this vintage

A cool, wet spring and a milder-than-usual summer made 2013 a late vintage in Valpolicella, with less opulent, tauter wines of great aromatic definition. Quintarelli's Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2013 draws remarkable freshness from that season: cherry, redcurrant, prune, spice, herbs and notes of tobacco and leather, on a structured yet slender palate with fine tannins and a long, savoury close. Robert Parker rewarded it with 96 points. Already expressive, it can be cellared with confidence for many years to come. Decant it for an hour or two before serving.

The producer · Giuseppe Quintarelli

Giuseppe Quintarelli, known to all as Bepi, was the master of Valpolicella and one of the great artisans of Italian wine. The winery stands at Cerè di Negrar, in the hills of Valpolicella Classica north of Verona, where the family has tended vines since the early twentieth century. Bepi took over after the war and, with almost monastic rigour, turned it into a legend: obsessive grape selection, long drying in the fruttai, slow fermentations and many years of ageing in large Slavonian oak casks, with wines released only when ready. The terraced vineyards, partly trained on pergola, grow Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella alongside varieties such as Cabernet, Nebbiolo and Croatina. Amarone is made only in years judged worthy. Since Bepi's death in 2012, his daughter Fiorenza and grandsons Francesco and Lorenzo Grassi have faithfully preserved his style: deep, complex wines of legendary longevity.
