Frost, hail and difficult flowering drastically reduced yields in Champagne in 2012, but a warm summer and a glorious September delivered concentrated, high-quality grapes with a rare balance of richness and freshness. The 2012 Comtes de Champagne is a brilliant expression, with 18/20 from Jancis Robinson and 95 points from Wine Advocate. The nose offers candied lemon, white peach, flowers, chalk and a note of butter and brioche; the palate is broad yet vibrant, with a silky mousse and a long, saline finish. Already enjoyable, it has many years of evolution ahead.
The producer · Taittinger
Founded in Reims in 1734 as Forest-Fourneaux and acquired by the Taittinger family in the 1930s, Maison Taittinger is one of the few great Champagne houses still run by the family whose name it bears. After a brief spell under other owners, Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger regained control in 2006, and today the house is chaired by his daughter Vitalie, alongside her brother Clovis. The house owns a substantial estate of vineyards spread across many Champagne crus, and its chalk cellars, partly dating back to ancient abbeys, host long ageing on the lees. The style is recognisable for the prominent role of Chardonnay, which brings elegance, freshness and finesse to the range. The house's emblem is Comtes de Champagne, a vintage Blanc de Blancs made only in the finest years from Côte des Blancs grand cru fruit: one of the most refined and long-lived prestige Champagnes.
