Considered one of Champagne's great modern vintages, 2008 had a cool, cloudy summer followed by a bright September, giving grapes of high acidity and great purity and wines of extraordinary longevity. Taittinger's 2008 Comtes de Champagne ranks among its peaks, with 100 points from James Suckling and 97 from Wine Spectator. The nose shows citrus, hawthorn blossom, apple, chalk and a hint of brioche; the palate is taut, very deep, full of energy and precision. Already magnificent today, it is a Champagne destined to evolve gracefully for a long time.
The producer · Taittinger
Founded in Reims in 1734 as Forest-Fourneaux and acquired by the Taittinger family in the 1930s, Maison Taittinger is one of the few great Champagne houses still run by the family whose name it bears. After a brief spell under other owners, Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger regained control in 2006, and today the house is chaired by his daughter Vitalie, alongside her brother Clovis. The house owns a substantial estate of vineyards spread across many Champagne crus, and its chalk cellars, partly dating back to ancient abbeys, host long ageing on the lees. The style is recognisable for the prominent role of Chardonnay, which brings elegance, freshness and finesse to the range. The house's emblem is Comtes de Champagne, a vintage Blanc de Blancs made only in the finest years from Côte des Blancs grand cru fruit: one of the most refined and long-lived prestige Champagnes.
