The wine in this vintage

2006 in Champagne was a warm, generous vintage, with a scorching July, a cooler August and a harvest of ripe, healthy grapes, producing rich, approachable wines. Taittinger's 2006 Comtes de Champagne captures that roundness without losing the tension typical of Côte des Blancs Chardonnay: notes of ripe yellow fruit, candied citrus, white flowers, brioche and hazelnut, a very fine mousse and a creamy palate with a saline, chalky finish. Wine Advocate rated it 96 points. The wine has gained lovely complexity while keeping its freshness: it can be enjoyed now and will continue to evolve for some years.

The producer · Taittinger

Founded in Reims in 1734 as Forest-Fourneaux and acquired by the Taittinger family in the 1930s, Maison Taittinger is one of the few great Champagne houses still run by the family whose name it bears. After a brief spell under other owners, Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger regained control in 2006, and today the house is chaired by his daughter Vitalie, alongside her brother Clovis. The house owns a substantial estate of vineyards spread across many Champagne crus, and its chalk cellars, partly dating back to ancient abbeys, host long ageing on the lees. The style is recognisable for the prominent role of Chardonnay, which brings elegance, freshness and finesse to the range. The house's emblem is Comtes de Champagne, a vintage Blanc de Blancs made only in the finest years from Côte des Blancs grand cru fruit: one of the most refined and long-lived prestige Champagnes.
