April frost and a cool, damp summer made 2021 a difficult vintage in Burgundy, with very low yields and the need for rigorous selection. The resulting wines have a more classic, transparent and delicate profile. Clos de Tart 2021 expresses itself with great finesse: red cherry, raspberry, rose petals, fine spice, tea leaf and a mineral vein, on a sleek, saline palate with slender tannins. Robert Parker awarded it 95 points. Less powerful than the warmer vintages, this is an elegant Grand Cru that can already be enjoyed, yet it can be cellared with confidence for many years as its aromatic range deepens.
The producer · Domaine Clos de Tart
Clos de Tart is one of Burgundy's oldest and most fascinating places. The vineyard, in Morey-Saint-Denis at the heart of the Côte de Nuits, was founded in the twelfth century by the Cistercian nuns of Tart Abbey, who looked after it for centuries until the French Revolution. It has never been divided since: at roughly seven and a half hectares, it is one of the largest Grand Cru monopoles in Burgundy and has changed hands only a few times in its history. From 1932 to 2017 it belonged to the Mommessin family, before being acquired by Artémis Domaines, the Pinault family's wine group. The clos runs down the slope in rows planted north to south, perpendicular to the hill, a rare layout that ensures even exposure and protects the soils from erosion. In recent years the estate has moved to organic and biodynamic viticulture. The style of Clos de Tart combines depth, density and aromatic finesse of great purity, producing wines that age magnificently.
