The wine in this vintage

2019 in Burgundy was a hot, dry vintage with reduced yields and small berries, which the best producers turned into concentrated yet surprisingly fresh and balanced wines. Clos de Tart 2019 offers a reading of great depth: black cherry, raspberry, rose, oriental spice, forest floor and a mineral note unfold on a dense, silky palate, supported by very fine tannins and long persistence. Robert Parker awarded it 97 points. The complexity of the monopole, with its varied soils along the slope, comes through clearly. This is a Grand Cru that is still young and deserves several years in the cellar to express itself fully.

The producer · Domaine Clos de Tart

Clos de Tart is one of Burgundy's oldest and most fascinating places. The vineyard, in Morey-Saint-Denis at the heart of the Côte de Nuits, was founded in the twelfth century by the Cistercian nuns of Tart Abbey, who looked after it for centuries until the French Revolution. It has never been divided since: at roughly seven and a half hectares, it is one of the largest Grand Cru monopoles in Burgundy and has changed hands only a few times in its history. From 1932 to 2017 it belonged to the Mommessin family, before being acquired by Artémis Domaines, the Pinault family's wine group. The clos runs down the slope in rows planted north to south, perpendicular to the hill, a rare layout that ensures even exposure and protects the soils from erosion. In recent years the estate has moved to organic and biodynamic viticulture. The style of Clos de Tart combines depth, density and aromatic finesse of great purity, producing wines that age magnificently.
