Among the earliest harvests ever recorded in Burgundy, 2020 came from a hot, very dry season that produced concentrated wines with dark fruit yet surprising freshness. Clos de Tart 2020 combines that intensity with the elegance typical of the monopole: blackberry, black cherry, violet, liquorice, spice and earthy notes on a full, chiselled palate with dense, polished tannins. Robert Parker rated it 96 points. This is a wine of great structure, still compact and youthful today; with time it will develop the aromatic complexity and depth that make Clos de Tart one of the most captivating Grands Crus of the Côte de Nuits.
The producer · Domaine Clos de Tart
Clos de Tart is one of Burgundy's oldest and most fascinating places. The vineyard, in Morey-Saint-Denis at the heart of the Côte de Nuits, was founded in the twelfth century by the Cistercian nuns of Tart Abbey, who looked after it for centuries until the French Revolution. It has never been divided since: at roughly seven and a half hectares, it is one of the largest Grand Cru monopoles in Burgundy and has changed hands only a few times in its history. From 1932 to 2017 it belonged to the Mommessin family, before being acquired by Artémis Domaines, the Pinault family's wine group. The clos runs down the slope in rows planted north to south, perpendicular to the hill, a rare layout that ensures even exposure and protects the soils from erosion. In recent years the estate has moved to organic and biodynamic viticulture. The style of Clos de Tart combines depth, density and aromatic finesse of great purity, producing wines that age magnificently.
