2020 completed a trio of great Bordeaux vintages: a rainy spring, a very dry summer and an early harvest gave small, concentrated berries and wines of dark fruit and solid structure. Pontet-Canet 2020 interprets the year with energy and precision, offering cassis, blackberry, plum, graphite, violet and a touch of liquorice on an intense, fresh palate with dense but polished tannins and a long, savoury finish. Robert Parker rated it 97 points. Still young, it will be at its best after a few years of bottle age. Serve it at around 17°C, ideally after decanting, with roast lamb, beef fillet or game.
The producer · Château Pontet-Canet
Located in Pauillac, next to Mouton Rothschild, Château Pontet-Canet owes its name to Jean-François de Pontet, who began assembling the estate's land in the eighteenth century, later expanded with the Canet vineyards. Classified as a Cinquième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it was bought in 1975 by the Tesseron family, already established in the Cognac trade. Under Alfred Tesseron and now his daughter Justine, Pontet-Canet has become a pioneer: it was among the first great Médoc growths to convert to biodynamics, certified in 2010, and works part of its soils with draught horses. The vineyard, on deep gravel and clay-limestone, is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. In the cellar, concrete vats and wood sit alongside terracotta amphorae made with clay from the estate. The result is a Pauillac of great purity, energy and depth, now compared in quality with the finest wines of the Médoc, well beyond its official rank.
