The wine in this vintage

2018 was a demanding year for Bordeaux's biodynamic vineyards: the damp spring brought heavy mildew pressure that reduced yields, before a hot, dry summer ensured full ripeness. At Pontet-Canet the result is a wine of extraordinary concentration and purity. Pontet-Canet 2018 offers cassis, blackberry, violet, graphite, spice and herbs on a dense yet luminous palate with fine, silky tannins and a very long finish. Robert Parker and Wine Enthusiast both rated it 98 points. Still young, it has many years of evolution ahead. An hour or two in a decanter rewards it; pair it with grilled beef or classic lamb dishes.

The producer · Château Pontet-Canet

Located in Pauillac, next to Mouton Rothschild, Château Pontet-Canet owes its name to Jean-François de Pontet, who began assembling the estate's land in the eighteenth century, later expanded with the Canet vineyards. Classified as a Cinquième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it was bought in 1975 by the Tesseron family, already established in the Cognac trade. Under Alfred Tesseron and now his daughter Justine, Pontet-Canet has become a pioneer: it was among the first great Médoc growths to convert to biodynamics, certified in 2010, and works part of its soils with draught horses. The vineyard, on deep gravel and clay-limestone, is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. In the cellar, concrete vats and wood sit alongside terracotta amphorae made with clay from the estate. The result is a Pauillac of great purity, energy and depth, now compared in quality with the finest wines of the Médoc, well beyond its official rank.
