Summer heat, but with cool nights and timely rain: 2019 brought ripe, fragrant and very fresh Cabernet Sauvignon to Pauillac, in a vintage regarded as among the most successful of recent years. Pontet-Canet 2019 is one of the estate's most complete expressions, with blackcurrant, blueberry, violet, graphite, cedar and fine spice on a vibrant, deep palate with very fine tannins and extraordinary length. Robert Parker awarded it 99 points. Already seductive for the purity of its fruit, it is destined to grow in bottle for a long time. It shows its best at cellar temperature, alongside roast game, veal or hard cheeses.
The producer · Château Pontet-Canet
Located in Pauillac, next to Mouton Rothschild, Château Pontet-Canet owes its name to Jean-François de Pontet, who began assembling the estate's land in the eighteenth century, later expanded with the Canet vineyards. Classified as a Cinquième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it was bought in 1975 by the Tesseron family, already established in the Cognac trade. Under Alfred Tesseron and now his daughter Justine, Pontet-Canet has become a pioneer: it was among the first great Médoc growths to convert to biodynamics, certified in 2010, and works part of its soils with draught horses. The vineyard, on deep gravel and clay-limestone, is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. In the cellar, concrete vats and wood sit alongside terracotta amphorae made with clay from the estate. The result is a Pauillac of great purity, energy and depth, now compared in quality with the finest wines of the Médoc, well beyond its official rank.
