The wine in this vintage

2020 completed a remarkable trilogy of Bordeaux vintages: a rainy spring, a very dry and hot summer and an early harvest produced concentrated wines of intense fruit, yet supported by notable freshness. Léoville Poyferré 2020 is deep and structured, with blackcurrant, blackberry, dark cherry, liquorice, spice and graphite notes, and a dense palate with firm, ripe tannins. Robert Parker awarded it 96 points. Still young, the wine currently shows power and concentration above all: time in the cellar will allow it to find its full elegance and the silky texture typical of the estate.

The producer · Château Léoville Poyferré

A Second Growth in the 1855 classification, Château Léoville Poyferré is one of the three properties born from the division of the vast historic Léoville estate in Saint-Julien, whose origins date back to the seventeenth century. After the estate was split between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the part that would become Poyferré passed through several families until the Cuvelier family bought it in 1920. They have owned it ever since: from the 1980s Didier Cuvelier drove a decisive rise in quality, investing in vineyard and cellar and working with consultant oenologist Michel Rolland; today the estate is led by Sara Lecompte Cuvelier. The vineyards, on deep gravel soils overlooking the Gironde and bordering Léoville Las Cases and Léoville Barton, are planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with small amounts of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The house style stands out for rich, velvety fruit, great elegance and silky tannins, combining the classicism of Saint-Julien with seductive generosity.
