For Bordeaux's Left Bank, 2016 is one of the great vintages of the century: a rainy spring, a very dry summer and a balanced September produced Cabernet of extraordinary finesse, freshness and depth. Léoville Poyferré 2016 is a brilliant expression of it, with blackcurrant, blackberry, violet, graphite, cedar and a hint of liquorice, a deep, sleek palate and dense, very fine tannins. James Suckling and Decanter both awarded it 96 points, and Jancis Robinson 18.5/20. This is a wine of great classicism, still young, that deserves time in the cellar to reveal its full complexity and the hallmark polish of Saint-Julien.
The producer · Château Léoville Poyferré
A Second Growth in the 1855 classification, Château Léoville Poyferré is one of the three properties born from the division of the vast historic Léoville estate in Saint-Julien, whose origins date back to the seventeenth century. After the estate was split between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the part that would become Poyferré passed through several families until the Cuvelier family bought it in 1920. They have owned it ever since: from the 1980s Didier Cuvelier drove a decisive rise in quality, investing in vineyard and cellar and working with consultant oenologist Michel Rolland; today the estate is led by Sara Lecompte Cuvelier. The vineyards, on deep gravel soils overlooking the Gironde and bordering Léoville Las Cases and Léoville Barton, are planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with small amounts of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The house style stands out for rich, velvety fruit, great elegance and silky tannins, combining the classicism of Saint-Julien with seductive generosity.
