The wine in this vintage

A vintage of contrasts, 2018 in Bordeaux saw a damp spring with heavy mildew pressure, followed by a hot, dry summer that delivered concentrated, ripe grapes. Léoville Poyferré 2018 reflects the generosity of that year: blackberry, plum, cassis, chocolate, cedar and spice on a full, opulent palate with abundant yet velvety tannins and a warm finish. James Suckling awarded it 95 points and Robert Parker 94. It is a rich, enveloping wine that already opens with pleasure thanks to its ripe fruit, but it can be cellared for a long time, gaining greater finesse as it matures.

The producer · Château Léoville Poyferré

A Second Growth in the 1855 classification, Château Léoville Poyferré is one of the three properties born from the division of the vast historic Léoville estate in Saint-Julien, whose origins date back to the seventeenth century. After the estate was split between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the part that would become Poyferré passed through several families until the Cuvelier family bought it in 1920. They have owned it ever since: from the 1980s Didier Cuvelier drove a decisive rise in quality, investing in vineyard and cellar and working with consultant oenologist Michel Rolland; today the estate is led by Sara Lecompte Cuvelier. The vineyards, on deep gravel soils overlooking the Gironde and bordering Léoville Las Cases and Léoville Barton, are planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with small amounts of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The house style stands out for rich, velvety fruit, great elegance and silky tannins, combining the classicism of Saint-Julien with seductive generosity.
