A mild winter, a rainy spring and then a long summer drought: 2020 produced small, concentrated berries in Bordeaux and an early harvest in ideal conditions, completing a trio of great vintages after 2018 and 2019. Château Lafite Rothschild 2020 is intense and refined, with cassis, blackberry, violet, graphite, cedar and a touch of liquorice on a dense, energetic palate with fine, silky tannins and a very long finish. James Suckling rated it 99 points and Jancis Robinson 19/20. Still young, it needs several years in the cellar to reveal its full potential.
The producer · Château Lafite Rothschild
First among the Premiers Grands Crus Classés in the celebrated 1855 classification, Château Lafite Rothschild has been synonymous with great Bordeaux for centuries. As early as the eighteenth century, under the Marquis de Ségur, its wines were among the most coveted in Europe and graced the court of Versailles. In 1868 the estate was bought by Baron James de Rothschild and has since belonged to the French branch of the family: after the long stewardship of Baron Éric de Rothschild, it is now chaired by Saskia de Rothschild. The vineyard, over a hundred hectares in the north of Pauillac on the border with Saint-Estèphe, spreads across deep gravel croupes over limestone subsoil, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Lafite seeks elegance rather than power: aromas of cedar, graphite and dark fruit, silky tannins, an airy texture and legendary longevity. Its cellars hold historic vintages, testimony to a continuity few estates in the world can claim.
