The wine in this vintage

Bordeaux's 2011 is a classically styled vintage, born of a hot, early spring, a cool summer and irregular ripening: slimmer, at times austere wines that reveal finesse with time. On Pauillac's gravels, Cabernet Sauvignon nonetheless reached good balance. Château Lafite Rothschild 2011 shows blackcurrant, cedar, pencil shavings, tobacco leaf and floral notes, on a medium-bodied, taut palate with tannins that remain somewhat firm. Jancis Robinson rated it 17.5/20. Still closed and some way from its peak, this Lafite calls for patience and generous aeration. It shows its best at cellar temperature, alongside roast game, veal or hard cheeses.

The producer · Château Lafite Rothschild

First among the Premiers Grands Crus Classés in the celebrated 1855 classification, Château Lafite Rothschild has been synonymous with great Bordeaux for centuries. As early as the eighteenth century, under the Marquis de Ségur, its wines were among the most coveted in Europe and graced the court of Versailles. In 1868 the estate was bought by Baron James de Rothschild and has since belonged to the French branch of the family: after the long stewardship of Baron Éric de Rothschild, it is now chaired by Saskia de Rothschild. The vineyard, over a hundred hectares in the north of Pauillac on the border with Saint-Estèphe, spreads across deep gravel croupes over limestone subsoil, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Lafite seeks elegance rather than power: aromas of cedar, graphite and dark fruit, silky tannins, an airy texture and legendary longevity. Its cellars hold historic vintages, testimony to a continuity few estates in the world can claim.
