The wine in this vintage

2008 is considered one of Champagne's great classic vintages: a cool summer and a dry, bright September produced healthy grapes of great acidity and purity, ideal for long-lived wines. N.P.U. 2008 offers a crystalline interpretation: citrus, pear, hawthorn blossom, chalk, hazelnut and a delicate pastry note, with oak perfectly integrated. The palate is taut, vibrant and vertical, with a silky mousse and a very persistent finish. Wine Enthusiast awarded it 96 points. It already shows real class, yet its energy will allow it to be cellared and to develop well for many years to come.

The producer · Bruno Paillard

Bruno Paillard is one of the youngest of the great Champagne houses: it was founded in Reims in 1981 by Bruno Paillard, scion of a family of growers and brokers active in Champagne for generations, who, so the story goes, sold his beloved vintage car to launch the business. Within a few decades the house earned its reputation for a precise, pure and highly refined style, now carried forward together with his daughter Alice. Bruno Paillard was a pioneer of transparency, among the first to print the disgorgement date on the label so that every enthusiast could know the true age of the wine. The house philosophy favours very low dosage, long lees ageing and further rest in the cellar after disgorgement. Its own vineyards include plots in several prestigious crus, complemented by carefully selected sourcing. The top cuvée is N.P.U., Nec Plus Ultra, a vintage Champagne made only in the finest years from Grand Cru grapes.
