Is this wine in your eWibe Cellar? Offer it for saleThe wine in this vintage
2003 is one of the most unusual vintages in Champagne history: an April frost devastated Chardonnay in particular, then a record-breaking heatwave brought one of the earliest harvests ever recorded, with tiny yields and very ripe grapes. Very few houses declared the vintage, and Bruno Paillard was among them. N.P.U. 2003 is rich and powerful, with ripe yellow fruit, dried apricot, hazelnut, honey and spice, yet with surprising freshness for the year. Robert Parker awarded it 96 points. Despite its age, the wine is still evolving: a rare interpretation of an extreme vintage that deserves to be waited for a while longer.
The producer · Bruno Paillard
Bruno Paillard is one of the youngest of the great Champagne houses: it was founded in Reims in 1981 by Bruno Paillard, scion of a family of growers and brokers active in Champagne for generations, who, so the story goes, sold his beloved vintage car to launch the business. Within a few decades the house earned its reputation for a precise, pure and highly refined style, now carried forward together with his daughter Alice. Bruno Paillard was a pioneer of transparency, among the first to print the disgorgement date on the label so that every enthusiast could know the true age of the wine. The house philosophy favours very low dosage, long lees ageing and further rest in the cellar after disgorgement. Its own vineyards include plots in several prestigious crus, complemented by carefully selected sourcing. The top cuvée is N.P.U., Nec Plus Ultra, a vintage Champagne made only in the finest years from Grand Cru grapes.
