Is this wine in your eWibe Cellar? Offer it for saleThe wine in this vintage
After the difficulties of 2003, 2004 gave Champagne back a generous, even vintage, with an abundant harvest of healthy grapes producing fresh, elegant and long-lived wines. N.P.U. 2004 embodies this classic tension: candied lemon, apple, white flowers, almond and brioche, with chalky minerality and a subtle toasty note from the oak. The palate is streamlined and precise, with a very fine bead and a long, saline finish. Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast and Antonio Galloni all rated it 95 points. Despite its long ageing, the wine is still young and far from its peak: it deserves cellaring to reveal its full complexity.
The producer · Bruno Paillard
Bruno Paillard is one of the youngest of the great Champagne houses: it was founded in Reims in 1981 by Bruno Paillard, scion of a family of growers and brokers active in Champagne for generations, who, so the story goes, sold his beloved vintage car to launch the business. Within a few decades the house earned its reputation for a precise, pure and highly refined style, now carried forward together with his daughter Alice. Bruno Paillard was a pioneer of transparency, among the first to print the disgorgement date on the label so that every enthusiast could know the true age of the wine. The house philosophy favours very low dosage, long lees ageing and further rest in the cellar after disgorgement. Its own vineyards include plots in several prestigious crus, complemented by carefully selected sourcing. The top cuvée is N.P.U., Nec Plus Ultra, a vintage Champagne made only in the finest years from Grand Cru grapes.
