Hot and drought-stricken, 2012 put Chianti Classico vineyards through a gruelling summer that ended with late-season rain, allowing ripening to finish; yields were low and the fruit concentrated. Flaccianello della Pieve 2012 reflects this with an intense, spicy profile: dark cherry, dried plum, leather, liquorice and Mediterranean scrub. The palate is structured, with firm tannins and a warm, savoury finish. Jancis Robinson rated it 17.5/20. More austere than other vintages, it is a Sangiovese that has found good harmony with time: it drinks well today and can hold for a few more years in the cellar.
The producer · Fontodi
Fontodi lies in Panzano's Conca d'Oro, the natural amphitheatre south of the village in the heart of Chianti Classico, whose name, the Golden Shell, recalls the golden wheat once grown here. The estate was bought in 1968 by the Manetti family, long-established makers of Tuscan terracotta, and is now led by Giovanni Manetti, a key figure of the appellation and a former president of the Chianti Classico Consortium. South-facing vineyards at roughly 300 to 500 metres sit on galestro and alberese soils and enjoy intense light and wide temperature swings. The estate is certified organic and runs an integrated farm that includes a herd of Chianina cattle to provide manure. Its flagship is Flaccianello della Pieve, a pure Sangiovese first made in 1981 and now among Italy's most acclaimed wines, alongside the Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo and Terrazze San Leolino and the estate's Chianti Classico.
