The wine in this vintage

2017 was a hot, drought-stricken year in the Langhe, with spring frosts and a torrid summer that cut yields and brought harvest forward; the best Barolos combine ripe fruit with substantial tannins and required careful handling to keep their balance. In Serralunga, deeper soils and the sensitivity of traditional growers helped preserve freshness. Cappellano's Barolo Piè Rupestris 2017 shows a warm yet composed profile: dark cherry, plum, dried rose, pepper, tobacco, leather and a balsamic touch, with a full palate, firm tannins and a savoury, persistent finish. The wine is already enjoyable with adequate decanting, but its structure allows it to gain finesse and complexity with a few more years in the cellar.

The producer · Cappellano

The Cappellano family's history in Serralunga d'Alba dates back to the nineteenth century and is also tied to the birth of Barolo Chinato, whose recipe was perfected by the pharmacist Giuseppe Cappellano. But it was under Teobaldo Cappellano, who died in 2009, that the winery became a symbol: a deeply cultured man of great integrity, he was one of the most uncompromising guardians of traditional Barolo and chose to stop submitting his wines for critics' scores, asking that they be judged only in the glass. Today his son Augusto continues along the same path. The heart of the estate is the Otin Fiorin vineyard in the Gabutti cru of Serralunga, which gives two Barolos: Piè Franco, from ungrafted Nebbiolo vines on their own roots, and Piè Rupestris, from vines grafted onto the American Rupestris rootstock. Natural vinifications, long macerations and ageing in large casks produce wines of great purity, authentic and long-lived, made in small quantities and eagerly sought by enthusiasts.
