After a snowy winter and a wet spring, 2012 saw a hot summer and a balanced late season, producing medium-bodied, harmonious Barolos of real finesse. Bartolo Mascarello's Barolo 2012 interprets that sense of measure with the house's usual purity: raspberry, cherry, rose, herbs and a subtle note of tar; an elegant, savoury palate with fine tannins and a transparent texture. Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast both rated it 95 points. Today it offers a lovely balance between fruit and early tertiary notes, and can be kept for several more years without concern.
The producer · Bartolo Mascarello
Few estates embody Barolo tradition like Bartolo Mascarello. Founded in 1918 by Giulio Mascarello in the heart of the village of Barolo, it passed to his son Bartolo, a charismatic and uncompromising figure famed for his hand-drawn labels and his stubborn defence of traditional methods, and since 2005 it has been run by his daughter Maria Teresa. The philosophy has never changed: a single Barolo, blended from grapes grown in some of the commune's historic crus, such as Cannubi, San Lorenzo and Rué, along with Rocche dell'Annunziata in La Morra. Long macerations in concrete vats, ageing in large Slavonian oak casks and no concession to barriques produce wines that are austere in youth, of great purity and transparency, and able to evolve for decades. The conviction that Barolo was historically born from the blending of several vineyards rather than a single cru makes the house a cultural as well as an oenological reference, with a limited production sought after by enthusiasts worldwide.
