The wine in this vintage

2005 was an irregular year in the Langhe: a warm summer but rain close to harvest, rewarding those who waited and selected carefully. It was also the year Bartolo Mascarello passed away, leaving the estate to his daughter Maria Teresa. The Barolo 2005 reflects the house style with a classic, austere profile: cherry, dried rose, tar, tobacco, medicinal herbs and forest floor; a medium-bodied, taut palate with tannins still present and a savoury finish. Robert Parker gave it 95 points. Despite its age, the wine has not yet reached its peak: its structure needs more time to fully unwind.

The producer · Bartolo Mascarello

Few estates embody Barolo tradition like Bartolo Mascarello. Founded in 1918 by Giulio Mascarello in the heart of the village of Barolo, it passed to his son Bartolo, a charismatic and uncompromising figure famed for his hand-drawn labels and his stubborn defence of traditional methods, and since 2005 it has been run by his daughter Maria Teresa. The philosophy has never changed: a single Barolo, blended from grapes grown in some of the commune's historic crus, such as Cannubi, San Lorenzo and Rué, along with Rocche dell'Annunziata in La Morra. Long macerations in concrete vats, ageing in large Slavonian oak casks and no concession to barriques produce wines that are austere in youth, of great purity and transparency, and able to evolve for decades. The conviction that Barolo was historically born from the blending of several vineyards rather than a single cru makes the house a cultural as well as an oenological reference, with a limited production sought after by enthusiasts worldwide.
